In large groups, they can colonize a yard and destroy it with feces, honking, feathers. I've seen that happen at a friend's Michigan lake house. They can also wreak havoc with airplanes, evidenced by the plane that ditched into the Hudson.
But taken in small numbers, say the five of them floating idly in Lake Cheston today, they're beautiful -- as much for themselves as for the way they break the water, rippling the surface into a shimmering painter's palette.
