(except what people discard,
but that's another story):
fallen limbs, branches, trees
house small animals;
their stumps provide perches
or pecking places;
on decaying wood
mosses, lichens, fungi
sprout forth, burning
like little suns on dark days;
and sometimes people
build a fire or construct
an artful shelter
for no reason
other than joy.
