October Beans

It's August, so it's odd that October Beans flourish.

Speckled white-and-red bean packets hold little beauties that, when cooked, are boring ecru . . . but . . . there's absolutely nothing boring about their flavor: something like a butter bean and something like a blackeye and something like a navy -- a bit of earth and sun.

The October Bean celebrates summer in the mouth!

I had my first taste of October beans recently. Delicious! I don't know why my folks never grew them. They always had butter peas and field peas, two of my favorites.

The farmer who brought the October Beans to market was surprised I had never seen them. I'm a native Alabamian who ate all kinds of beans and peas all summer long, but I'd never even heard of them. Maybe they're sort of old fashioned and getting reintroduced as heirlooms of some kind.
